Esther’s Wild Rides
Eleven-year- old Esther is delighted when her father, the agent selling land for a new town on the Clackamas River, brings her on one of his train trips from Portland, Oregon, to Cazadero, the location of the first hydroelectric dam on the river. Her father arranges for her to ride in the locomotive’s cab, but the trip becomes more of an adventure than anyone anticipates when both the engineer and fireman are injured. Esther must gather her courage, and try to stop the runaway train. The next year, at the town’s big parade, Esther has to summon her bravery again when a mix-up of horses puts the town’s mayor and the townspeople along the parade route in grave danger.
